Headaches and Migraines

Headaches and migraines are common conditions experienced by people of all ages. Headache symptoms may include mild and recurring tension headaches or more severe and debilitating migraines, to potentially life-threatening headaches associated with meningitis. Headaches are often triggered by stress originating from the neck and shoulders, poor posture, dehydration and jaw pain, to name a few.

The most common headache that present in the clinic is cervicogenic or tension headache associated with neck tension sometimes radiating into the shoulders and to the base of the skull. This type of headache is commonly related to prolonged periods of sitting at a computer or desk and can be relieved with gentle techniques aimed at releasing these tensions allowing for improved range of motion and enhanced circulation to the head.

Can Osteopathy Help With Headaches and Migraines?

Jaw Pain (Temporomandibular Joint Pain or TMJ)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an intricate system made of up 3 parts:  the temporal bone (which houses the ear), the mandible (jaw) and the articular disc (disc) between the two. There are also numerous muscles that assist in proper function of the TMJ.

The disc is sandwiched between the temporal bone and mandible and acts as a cushion between the two to prevent friction. Asymmetric tension of various muscles or misalignment of the temporal bone with the mandible can cause dysfunction in this joint causing symptoms such as pain, clicking in opening or closing of the mouth, jaw locking, difficulty chewing, ear aches and headaches. Some of the common causes of TMJ dysfunction are bruxism (grinding of teeth), dental extractions or other dental work, and external trauma or injury.

Can Osteopathy Help With Jaw Pain?

The aim of osteopathic treatment in TMJ dysfunction is to allow each portion of this intricate system to function optimally and in synchronicity. This may be achieved through gentle osteopathic techniques aimed at releasing the musculoskeletal areas that are restrictive or under tension.
